Planning Ahead Could Be the Key to Getting the Travel Destination You Want!

Do you want to relax on the beach, hike the mountains or sight-see in the big city? One of the great things about being a travel nurse is the adventure that comes with traveling the country and visiting new places. However, some of the top destination states for travel nurses can have long waits for obtaining a nursing license. States such as California, Oregon and New York can take anywhere from 6-8 weeks. Long waits can be frustrating and deter some nurses from taking assignments in these areas. However, planning ahead can ease the frustration and ensure you get your “dream” travel assignment.

Here are a few tips that can help you get the assignment destinations YOU want:

  1. Make a “Travel Road Map” for the year. Map out all the destinations where you would like to have an assignment.  Discuss your “Travel Road Map” with your recruiter so they can watch for the assignments that match your needs.
  2. Determine which states you already hold a license in or can obtain one quickly (temp license with Nursys, walk-thru states, etc).
  3. While on assignment in one of the “quick license” states identified on your “Road Map”, start the process of obtaining a license in the states that have longer waits.
  4. Standard assignments are 13 weeks and it takes 8 weeks to obtain a California license. Start the license process for the California license around the second week of your current assignment. Your California license process should be completed by the time your current assignment ends. Then off to California you go!
